Sheriff’s office warns of new phone scam

Officials with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office are warning the public of a current telephone scam in which suspects are impersonating deputies and providing a callback number that plays a message intended to further trick victims.

A warning from the sheriff’s office stated the scam callers attempt to collect a fine in lieu of arrest for outstanding warrants. “They tell victims they can avoid arrest by withdrawing cash and transferring the funds to the sheriff’s office by purchasing a prepaid debit card and reading the card over the phone to satisfy the fine,” officials explained, saying the scammers also request deposits of cash into bitcoin ATMs.

The scam call comes from 404-751-3724, which is not a phone number associated with the sheriff’s office, stated officials. Calling the number back prompts a message to play that sounds like an answering service, directing callers to press numbers to reach different departments within the sheriff’s office, however law enforcement said the recording is “entirely fake.”…
