Violence marred the weekend in DeKalb County as two separate shootings claimed the lives of two individuals on Sunday. According to WSBTV, the first incident occurred near the intersection of Covington Highway and Wellborn Road. During an argument at a Chevron gas station, multiple shots were fired, leading to the death of a young man who police are still trying to fully identify. In close proximity to this event, another fatal altercation took place in a parking lot on Covington Highway, where officers found a man deceased from gunshot wounds.
DeKalb County Police Department swiftly executed their response, managing to arrest two suspects in connection with the parking lot shooting. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Miles Simpson, 25, and Laneice O’Neil, 33, were charged with malice murder and are currently held in DeKalb County Jail. Investigators have pieced together that a vehicle pulled up to the scene prior to the shooting, with one occupant exiting to shoot the man before departing.
The second shooting, which took place near Royal Style Pharmacy on Evans Mill Road, remains under investigation. Officers found six evidence markers at the scene outside of the gas station, indicating a possible lead into the shooter’s identity. There is yet to be an arrest made in this case.
