Decatur Residents Celebrate Crossing Guards for Keeping Our Streets Safe

Last week, the City of Decatur observed Crossing Guard Appreciation Week. The week ended with the annual Crossing Guard Appreciation Breakfast on Friday, November 14, 2025. The event recognized the city’s 50 crossing guards. This group is larger than Decatur’s police force. The city aims to maintain safe, walkable, and bike-friendly streets.

Crossing guards in Decatur help students cross streets safely. They also assist during community events such as festivals and parades. Their presence supports Decatur’s status as a Gold level Walk Friendly Community and a Silver level Bicycle Friendly Community.

This year’s breakfast was prepared and served by students from the Decatur High School Culinary Arts Program. Two crossing guards received special recognition. Joyce Washington was honored for 20 years of service. Larry McCrary was named Crossing Guard of the Year after receiving 78 community votes…
