13-year-old boy recovering after mom says celebratory gunfire struck him on New Year’s Eve in Clayton Co.

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Clayton County mother is speaking out after her 13-year-old son survived being struck by celebratory gunfire on New Year’s Eve, hoping his recovery and not a funeral will convince others to stop firing guns into the air.

“I’m just glad that’s he’s alive because it could’ve been worse,” said the boy’s mother, Michelle Cockfield.

The shooting happened shortly after the ball dropped inside the Retreat at Baywood apartment complex in Morrow. Cockfield said she had stepped outside with her son to pick up her oldest child when the incident unfolded…
