A devastating house fire in DeKalb County claimed the lives of four family members Wednesday night. The victims, identified by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office and reported by WSB-TV, included 43-year-old Joseph Thomas, 73-year-old Maryann Chambers, 70-year-old John Chambers, and 70-year-old Willie Smith.
DeKalb County firefighters responded to the scene on Winthrop Drive to find the home engulfed in flames. While they were able to rescue one victim, later identified as Joseph Thomas or “Pac-Man,” he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital. Three other victims were discovered posthumously inside the home. Reports from FOX 5 Atlanta revealed that a family member verified two of the deceased as his parents.
The narrative of that night took a heroic turn when family members recalled that Willie “Junior” Smith died while trying to save others from the blaze. “He went back in to see if he could help some of them out, and he never came back out,” neighbor Gladys Kinchen recounted in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta.
