State Patrol trooper recovering, vehicle hit by suspected drunk driver

DENVER (KDVR) — A Colorado State Patrol trooper is home and recovering from non-life-threatening injuries after his cruiser was struck by a driver suspected of being under the influence.

According to a release, the incident occurred just before 1 a.m. on westbound I-70 near Watkins, after a trooper attempted to stop a vehicle that was not passing while in the left lane.

The vehicle stopped upon the emergency light activation; however, the driver stopped in the left lane, and the trooper pulled behind to instruct the driver to move to the shoulder and allow traffic.

While stopping, a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee reportedly rear-ended the patrol cruiser at high speeds, pushing the cruiser into the pulled-over vehicle, a blue Saturn Outlook.

The trooper and the occupants of the Saturn, a 44-year-old woman and a teenage girl from Aurora, were hospitalized for injury assessments. The original driver, according to the release, was charged with failing to yield and driving without a license and without proof of insurance.

The Jeep driver, a 47-year-old Byers woman, was released on a court summons for suspected driving under the influence and other potential charges. The injured parties have been released from the hospital with non-life-threatening and minor injuries…
