Man fatally shot by Broomfield police did not drop knife after commands, body camera footage shows

A man fatally shot by Broomfield police in June was holding a knife on a porch and appeared to move toward the home where his mother was before the officer shot him, according to body camera footage released Monday.

A woman called 911 in the evening June 26 and reported that her brother had a knife and was standing on the front porch of the family’s home, according to the dispatch audio released Monday. The woman told the dispatcher that her brother is “on the spectrum” and that her 86-year-old mother was still inside the home. She can also be heard telling her mother to lock the door.

“Please don’t shoot him — he has mental illness,” the woman can be heard on body camera footage telling police as they arrive on scene, later adding: “He’s not a violent person, he’s really not.”…
