Denver Zoo mourns tragic passing of 2-month old buffalo

DENVER (KDVR) — Barely two months after Kai was born, the Denver Zoo announced that it tragically had to euthanize the Cape buffalo calf over severe medical concerns.

According to the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance, the Veterinary Medicine and Wildlife Care teams decided on Monday to euthanize Kai, a newborn Cape buffalo, after a clinical evaluation.

The medical review, including blood testing, indicated kidney failure, and despite available treatment options, the Vet Med team deemed that the recovery odds were too low.

“We carefully evaluated every feasible option before making this difficult decision, one that was made collectively, with Kai’s well-being at the center of every consideration,” the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance said.
