Colfax Cold Case Still Haunts Denver As Cops Renew Hunt In Killing Of Earnest Cox

Four years after 22-year-old Earnest Cox was gunned down just off East Colfax Avenue, Denver police are again asking the public to help them find whoever pulled the trigger.

The department renewed its appeal this week, posting a fresh call for tips on July 23, exactly four years after the killing. Investigators are still working the case, listed as number 2022-374008, and say Cox was shot and killed in the early morning hours near East Colfax Avenue and North Monaco Parkway on July 23, 2022.

Police outline what happened that night

According to the Denver Police Department, officers were called to the area at approximately 3:12 a.m. on July 23, 2022. The case remains open as a homicide investigation.

As reported by Denver7, officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, and he was later identified by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner as 22-year-old Earnest Cox. Initial coverage at the time noted that no arrests had been made.

Why the department is speaking up again

In its July 23 post, the department said the renewed push was meant to coincide with the fourth anniversary of Cox’s killing and to keep the case in front of the community. Detectives are again asking for any photos, video, license plate information, or witness accounts from that night in the East Colfax and Monaco area…
