Delivery drones are coming to Colorado, and there’s not much local government can do about it

NORTHGLENN, Colo. (KDVR) — Cruising across the sky at up to 60 miles per hour, Walmart customers in the Denver metro will soon be able to get their online orders from an automated drone.

The major retailer and its partnering drone company, Wing, announced plans to launch in 2027, promising packages of up to 5 pounds delivered to homes in as fast as 30 minutes.

“You can get in your car, drive to the store, grab the carton of eggs, or whatever you may have forgotten, and spend all that time in local traffic in your vehicle,” said Jessie Poole-Strang, communications lead for Wing. Or you can use a far more efficient electric drone to deliver it right to your home.”

Love or hate the idea, city governments say there’s not much they can do to stop the automated delivery system in the sky. The Federal Aviation Administration regulates drones, including where they can fly and what their operations are…
