Colorado Authorities, Military Respond After Land Mine Discovered in Storage Unit

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office issued a shelter-in-place warning for a quarter-mile radius

A land mine was discovered in a Colorado storage unit Wednesday, prompting authorities to tell nearby residents to shelter in place.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office issued the warning for a quarter-mile radius of 10201 W. Hampden Ave., which is listed online as a self-storage facility.

“At that location, a land mine was discovered in a storage unit,” authorities said. “We have a bomb tech on scene and the military is responding to render the device safe .”

About two hours after the land mine was discovered, the Army determined the device was “inert,” and it was removed from the facility, per the sheriff’s office.

The shelter-in-place order has since been lifted.

It remains unclear if anything illegal took place.
