Driver reports dodging flying lumber during high winds in Colorado

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Strong winds on Monday created some real challenges for people all around the Denver metro.

At times, the mere sound of the wind could be deafening as gusts picked up in Boulder County. And it can be dangerous.

A rig overturned on Highway 93 just before noon, but what caused the crash has not been confirmed. Ruth Morehouse said she took a picture of a crashed 18-wheeler and described what happened earlier on her drive to Boulder.

“There was a semi with 2x4s (pieces of lumber) flying out the flatbed hitting other cars on the highway and whenever they would hit the highway and break. They (lumber) were all over. You had to drive on the median to get by,” Morehouse said.

Morehouse said several vehicles were trying to dodge flying the airborne lumber.

“Oh, it’s insane. It’s just awful out here. I was just trying to slow down and get back from it, so it didn’t hit me,” Morehouse said.

The winds struck the same area where the Marshall Fire started three years ago.  And like back then, there were also very dry conditions today.
