May is Colorado’s wettest month as unique weather patterns converge

DENVER — May has been identified as the wettest month of the year for eastern Colorado, averaging 2.16 inches of rainfall, due to a convergence of weather patterns unique to this time of year.

Unlike most regions where the warmest months typically see the most precipitation, Colorado experiences its peak rainfall during May when two distinct weather systems coincide, creating ideal conditions for significant moisture.

“Two things happen in the month of May that don’t happen any time of the year or at least don’t combine any other time of the year,” said 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Chris Bianchi. “We get summertime severe storms right during the month of May, especially the back half of May.”…
