DENVER (KDVR) — Since their pursuit policy changed less than 3 months ago, the Aurora Police Department has released data revealing how many pursuits were carried out and how many resulted in arrests.
The revised pursuit policy was implemented on March 5, allowing officers to pursue under the following circumstances, according to the APD website:
- The suspect has committed or is committing a felony and presents a serious risk to public safety if not immediately apprehended.
- The suspect has committed or is committing a crime involving a firearm that poses a serious threat of harm to the public.
- The suspect is driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (DUI/DWI).
- The suspect is driving a motor vehicle that has been confirmed stolen.
Before the policy was updated, Aurora Police Department Chief Todd Chamberlain said any kind of pursuit was “basically prohibited” for officers.
