Marijuana may be legal in the state of Colorado; however, there are some things you cannot legally do with it. One of those things is giving edibles to children.
According to 9 News, a Colorado teacher is facing misdemeanor child abuse charges after she allegedly gave two middle schoolers pot brownies after they won a writing contest in her class.
The teacher from Denver’s Kepner Beacon Middle School is accused of handing out homemade brownies that were infused with marijuana to the 12-year-old boys. The lawsuit was filed by the parents of the children on May 30, after both boys started to feel sick and strange. Some of the symptoms the two boys had included difficulty walking, focusing, and feeling like something that they did not understand was happening to them.
Medical Confirmation: THC in the Boys’ Systems
The parent took the boys to urgent care after the description of the symptoms and blood tests showed that THC was in their systems. The brownie was also tested by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and tested positive for THC.
A spokesperson from the Denver Public Schools said that the teacher who is facing the charges is no longer an employee of the district and was placed on paid administrative leave at the end of the 2023-2024 school year. The teacher, who taught language arts in the Denver Public School district, was separated from the school system in August 2024 before the start of the current school year.
Legal Timeline: Charges and Trial Dates
The unidentified teacher is currently on trial for the allegations of two counts of misdemeanor child abuse from the incident on June 3, 2024.
