Hit-and-run driver sentenced for killing Commerce City teen

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — A man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a deadly hit-and-run crash in Commerce City that killed 18-year-old Emiliano Malpica and injured several members of his family.

On Oct. 6, 2024, Emiliano’s parents and two brothers were driving near Holly Street and East 58th Avenue when authorities said 20-year-old Erik Hernandez-Escobar crashed into their vehicle while street racing. Emiliano was killed and two relatives suffered life-threatening injuries. Another family member was also hurt, according to the Adams County District Attorney’s Office.

Hernandez-Escobar fled the scene after the crash and later reported his car stolen. Investigators used cellphone data, crash notifications and location information from his Life360 account to place him at the site. A passenger later confirmed Hernandez-Escobar had been driving…
