Flashback: Colorado Families Fall Victim to Serial Killer

Serial killer Alex Ewing isn’t nearly as famous as the country’s most well-known, who include Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, and John Wayne Gacy, but the notorious murderer certainly committed atrocious crimes before being caught, including multiple that took place in Colorado.

Colorado’s Forgotten Serial Killer’s First Known Murder

Alex Christopher Ewing is a serial killer who brutally took the lives of numerous people, including some Coloradans, before being apprehended and sentenced to life imprisonment.

His first known murder took place on January 10, 1984, in Lakewood, Colorado, where he brutally murdered 50-year-old Patricia Smith with a hammer. The case remained cold for many years until DNA evidence linked Ewing to the crime and led to his conviction in 2021 and adding another life sentence to his rap sheet the following year.

Colorado’s Forgotten Serial Killer Murders an Innocent Family

Just six days after murdering Patricia Smith, Ewing broke into a home belonging to Bruce and Debra Bennett, where, after a struggle with the patriarch of the family, he murdered the couple and one of their young daughters. The youngest daughter, Vanessa, survived the attack.

Colorado’s Forgotten Serial Killer’s Subsequent Crimes

After the tragic events that took place at the Bennetts’ home, Ewing attacked Kim Haubenschild and Donna Holm in Aurora, but did not succeed in taking their lives.

Ewing went on to target more victims in Arizona and Nevada, all of whom survived the vicious attacks, and was eventually caught in Henderson, Nevada, where he received his first lengthy prison sentence…
