DENVER (KDVR) — The cold is coming to Denver with temperatures dipping close to freezing on Monday, and meteorologists are saying that locals should start to prepare for the first hard freeze.
The first freeze is when temperatures dip to 32 degrees or lower. Meanwhile, the first hard freeze is when temperatures drop to 28 degrees or colder for at least an hour, according to the Pinpoint Weather team.
When is the first snow expected in Denver?
The average first freeze in Denver is on Oct. 7, however, it has come as early as the start of September and as late as November, the Pinpoint Weather team said. While Denver is already past the average date when the city dips below 32 degrees, it should be within the next week or two.
On Monday morning, Denver hit 34 degrees, the coolest low in 160 days, since May 6. FOX31’s Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels said he expects the first freeze to be around mid-October, and the first hard freeze to come around the same time.
When is the first hard freeze?
The first hard freeze isn’t too far behind the first freeze. Michels said the Palmer Divide and foothills should get close to a hard freeze this weekend or by next week, while the first hard freeze may be a little longer for the metro.
