Lakewood man gets 41 months in federal prison for wire fraud of USGS funds

DENVER (KDVR) — A Lakewood man and former U.S. Geological Survey employee was sentenced after an investigation found that he used his federal government charge card to purchase personal items over the course of about 15 years.

James Montoya, 55, pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado announced Tuesday.

He was also ordered to pay $1,122,009.47 in restitution.

Montoya worked in the Lakewood office for the USGS, which is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior. The DOI found “numerous questionable transactions” on his government charge card during a routine initiative to identify misused funds, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said…
