From nearly shutting down to rolling forward: How a roller rink saved a local food non-profit

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) — Just days before Thanksgiving, Joy’s Kitchen faced a crisis.

The Denver-area nonprofit was abruptly forced out of its warehouse during the busiest time of the year for food distribution, leaving more than 133,000 pounds of food undistributed and putting thousands of meals at risk. The non-profit said it typically feeds 5,000 families per month.

“The night before this arrangement came into place, we decided we couldn’t operate without a facility,” said Kathleen Stanley, founder of Joy’s Kitchen. “We didn’t have funding, and we decided it was probably best to draw the project to an end.”
