Denver arson suspect identified through facial recognition after restaurant bathroom stop

DENVER — Investigators have arrested a 38-year-old man accused of starting a five-alarm fire at a Denver apartment building construction site after facial recognition technology matched surveillance footage from a nearby Indian restaurant where he allegedly changed clothes.

Tony Becerra faces charges in connection with the Jan. 2 fire after Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) investigators tracked him using dozens of cameras across the city. According to an arrest warrant, Becerra was captured on surveillance video walking away from the construction site dressed in black before eventually entering the Taste of India restaurant about a mile away on Leetsdale Drive.
