Denver ditches Flock Safety, picks new vendor for license plate reading cameras

DENVER (KDVR) — After months of debate and protest over Denver’s use of Flock Safety for license plate reader services, the city is moving to a new company to continue the services with an “extensive list of privacy safeguards.”

Flock Safety’s nearly three-year work with Denver has been under scrutiny for almost a year, as privacy concerns mounted and residents and city councilmembers worried about federal immigration officials’ access to data the company obtained through its Denver cameras.

The Denver City Council had denied approving an extension of Flock Safety’s contract with the city in May last year, but Denver Mayor Mike Johnston later approved a temporary extension that did not need council approval.
