DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man has been accused of dragging his dog for several blocks while she was hanging out the window of his vehicle by her leash.
According to a criminal complaint, late Thursday night, witnesses reported to police seeing a dog hanging out of a vehicle window by her leash and being dragged for several blocks until the leash snapped in the area of 3500 Grand Avenue. Witnesses also reported hearing the dog’s screams from several feet away.
When the dog’s leash broke, witnesses reported that the driver, identified as 60-year-old Patrick James Cornick, continued for several blocks before turning around and returning to the dog, according to the complaint. The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment.

As officers questioned Cornick, they noted that he had bloodshot watery eyes as well as slurred, confused, and rapid speech. According to a criminal complaint, Cornick admitted to using multiple prescription medications with drowsiness warnings. During questioning, officers said in the complaint that they found “several glass pipes in the car that contained narcotic residue” and a vape that contained liquid THC.
