Grimes plans to reduce when fireworks can be set off

GRIMES, Iowa — A change to the fireworks ordinance in Grimes is in the works and the city says it’s the result of feedback from residents.

According to the city , “We understand that fireworks bring up a lot of strong feelings, whether you love them or hate them. We hope changing when they can be set off will allow our town to celebrate the holiday while still respecting others.”

The new plan would reduce the amount of time fireworks can be used around Independence Day and eliminate usage around the New Year. It would allow fireworks on July 2nd and 3rd from noon to 10:00 p.m. and July 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Currently, the city’s ordinance says fireworks can be set off from July 1st to July 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., except on July 4th when they can be used from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Fireworks are also permitted to be used from December 29th to January 3rd between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., except the time is extended from December 31 to 12:30 a.m. on January 1.
