DES MOINES, Iowa — A recent drug arrest resulted in the largest single fentanyl seizure in the Des Moines Police Department’s history.
On Sunday Sharmarke Omar Mohamed , 35, was arrested in Decatur County after about 30,000 counterfeit pills suspected of containing fentanyl were found in his car. Mohamed was charged with one felony count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
Sgt. Paul Parizek with the Des Moines Police Department said this was the biggest drug bust in the department’s history.
“I don’t think we realized it was going to be the largest single seizure event the police departments ever made,” Parizek said. “These 30,000 pills that we took off the street, and are valued at about $500,000, is almost as much as we took off the street in all of 2023. So, I mean, this is a big deal.”

While this bust may come as a setback for drug dealers, it won’t stop them from continuing to bring it into the state as the demand for it is still high. But Parizek says the department is ready for it.
