These six current and former athletes were originally charged with identity theft and tampering with records:
- Nate Schon – wrestler
- Drew Woodley – wrestler
- Tyler Claiborne – football player
- Eddie Lemos – football player
- Jeremiah Mathis – former football player
- Howard Brown III – former football player
Prosecutors say they placed online bets using accounts that were not registered in their name. All six pleaded guilty to underage gambling.
A tampering with records charge is still pending against the seventh athlete, former Cyclone basketball player Osun Osunniyi.
In the summer of 2023, 15 student-athletes were charged after the DCI launched an investigation into potential illegal online gambling activity. The Iowa Department of Public Safety said it used geofence technology to “help identify anomalies suggesting suspicious or criminal activity that could undermine sports gambling in Iowa and ensure regulatory compliance.”
