In early 2023 the Des Moines Police Department investigated a two-week long shooting spree where the suspect would fire a gun into occupied homes around the city. In March, Walter John Dawson, Jr., 26, was identified as a suspect in the shootings and was found sleeping in a stolen vehicle. Officers also found a loaded firearm and a loaded, extended magazine in Dawson’s possession.
In September Dawson pled guilty to the charge of felon in possession of a firearm in connection to the shootings. Dawson was sentenced to the maximum 10 years in federal prison and must serve three years of supervised release.
