Ankeny Community School District to provide transitional kindergarten program

ANKENY, Iowa — The Ankeny Community School District will offer transitional kindergarten for the first time for this upcoming school year.

Transitional kindergarten programs are programs for children between preschool and kindergarten that allow for another year for a child to develop before starting kindergarten.

Tara Owen, the Executive Director of Elementary Schools for the Ankeny Community School District, said that transitional kindergarten gives parents more options in their child’s education.

“So transitional kindergarten, we’re saying is a bridge between preschool and kindergarten. It’s oftentimes thought about by families who are not sure quite yet if their child is ready for kindergarten. We still focus on kindergarten standards. We’ll follow that kindergarten schedule or the elementary schedule. So the day will be the same from 7:55 to 2:55. Yet we will go at a little bit of a slower pace with those kindergarten standards,” Owen said.
