United Way of Central Iowa and the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines are collaborating to tackle food insecurity in Central Iowa. This partnership involves donors, volunteers, nonprofits, community leaders, officials, and those affected by food insecurity. Mary Sellers, president of United Way of Central Iowa, stressed the need for collective action to improve food security.

Recently, the organizations presented a plan to reduce food insecurity. The Central Iowa Food Security Planning Committee, with consultants Jordan Vernoy and Scott Raecker, led the plan. It offers insights into community issues that hinder equal opportunities for all Central Iowans.

The Food Security Plan has four goals. First, to provide a welcoming experience for those needing food and services through a network of providers. Second, to create and implement data-informed policy solutions to improve life quality for those facing food insecurity. Third, to share the story of food insecurity in Central Iowa through a fair data collection process. Lastly, to build a stronger community by respecting the experiences of neighbors.
