‘That needs to be fixed:’ Murder victims aunt denied chance to speak in court

POLK COUNTY, Iowa – The aunt of a murder victim is speaking out on how she felt silenced by the Iowa code during the sentencing of the man convicted of killing her nephew. Friday, Surfun Boens was handed a life sentence without the possibility of parole for killing his roommate, Russell “Rusty” McKeehan Jr., in a south-side motel room last January. During his sentencing, McKeehan’s immediate family gave victim impact statements.
