One of the best cheese shops in the Midwest is here in Des Moines, says Midwest Living

Sometimes national publications leak some of the best places to eat in Des Moines, and this time, it’s a magazine with local roots. Midwest Living talked to Erika Kubick, a Chicago author who just published “Cheese Sex Death: A Bible for the Cheese Obsessed,” about some of her favorite cheese shops in middle America.

She only named three, and one was The Cheese Shop of Des Moines, the nearly 13-year-old store in the Shops at Roosevelt.

Kubick called it “one of those shops that’s very much admired by cheese aficionados.”

She recommended that cheese lovers should buy Milton Creamery’s Prairie Breeze cheddar, which she said pairs well with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

This isn’t the first time Midwest Living recognized The Cheese Shop. In 2018, the magazine shared the retail shop’s fondue recipe, made with Gruyere, garlic, cornstarch and white wine.

What’s the history behind The Cheese Shop?

C.J. and Kari Bienert opened the shop in 2011 at the Shops at Roosevelt. The tiny space includes a small seating area where customers can order cheese, wine, and craft beers. A refrigerated case shows off the collection of 100 or so cheeses.
