“It’s about liberation, it’s about joy.” Ames Pride Board member speaks of experiences in the community

As a member of the Ames Pride Board of Directors and the LGBTQIA+ community, longtime Ames musician Mook Bascomb navigates life by the motto “live and let live.”

The 42-year-old is heading into his fourth year of serving on the Ames Pride Board .

He was the stage coordinator for Pridefest 2023 and continues to serve in an entertainment role as a member of Ames-based band Vinyl Vagabonds

Ames Pride has been bringing queer events to the Ames community since 2017. Its largest event, Pridefest, is held every September. This year’s celebration will be held on Sept. 14.

Besides Pridefest, Ames Pride offers events at least once every quarter that center queer community and outreach. Bascomb is enthusiastic about providing Pride events in Ames, and hopes to bring even more to town.

The path to revealing his truth

Bascomb started his journey to becoming his most authentic self at the age of seven when he knew something about him was different. As he’s gotten older, he doesn’t take too well to labels, though he does say he’s “queer and present.”
