Service cuts at DART include Wi-Fi on buses

DES MOINES, Iowa — Monday, multiple service cuts take effect for Des Moines Area Regional Transit, the metro’s public transportation company.

Sarah Welch, the Communications Manager for DART, said DART is trying to minimize the impact that service cuts have on riders.

“Our goal is to try to limit that property tax growth for member communities at the same time recognizing that operating costs are rising. And you think about inflation and some other changes that have occurred have really impacted our budget. And so how do we make some of those changes but with the least amount of impact for our riders?” Welch said.

DART Buses will no longer provide Wi-Fi, meaning customers without cell phone service will need to purchase passes ahead of time. DART will still provide Wi-Fi to riders at DART Central Station.

DART is also reducing customer service hours, cutting Dart on Demand service in some areas, and increasing the fare price of DART on Demand rides.
