Milk making its way back to central Iowa schools after dairy’s mechanical malfunction

Des Moines’ Anderson Erickson Dairy says delivery of milk to central Iowa school districts is getting back to normal after a mechanical problem at its East University Avenue plant over Labor Day weekend.

Anderson Erickson Dairy marketing manager Trisha Barton said the problem affected the filler used for the half-pint cartons handed out to students in school cafeterias.

“In the nearly 100 years of business at AE Dairy, this was an unprecedented event” that interrupted school milk deliveries, Barton said.

She said repairs were completed Wednesday and regular deliveries resumed Friday, though some affected school districts reported supplies were still short.

Districts with which Anderson Erickson holds milk contracts include Ankeny, Johnston, Marshalltown, Waukee and West Des Moines, according to WHO TV .

Schools were offered gallon containers of milk, but some provided additional water and juice instead.
