DMPD’s new mobile app aims to connect the community to officers

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department released a new application that looks to connect the department to the community and streamline emergency communications.

The app will allow people to receive alerts on emergencies, severe weather and see resources that the department is offering. The department said that the idea was born out of the community wanting to hear from local law enforcement.

“This gives us the ability to go where they are and get them information fast, particularly information if it’s a critical incident and we need to get to something right now to help keep you safe” said Sergeant Paul Parizek with Des Moines Police.

The department is not using the application to track locations and the application does not give police the ability to do so. But it will push out notifications in emergency situations and for major crime events in the city. The application will not be a substitute for the department’s social media accounts or neighborhood meetings.
