Christmas Eve forecast: Fog, drizzle and rain

DES MOINES, Iowa — We began the day with light fog in spots, low clouds everywhere and are ending the day with a little mist here and there. Given the setup, it’s not surprising that temperatures have been cooler than the ones we saw on Monday. Your weather timeline below guides Santa through his trip tonight and the rest of us over the river and through the woods with some fog and drizzle:

Fog will likely be an issue the next two nights and may become more widespread Christmas night and Thursday morning. Use caution when travelling late. We’ll likely also see some periods of mist and drizzle through Thursday morning, with maybe a Wednesday flurry thrown in for fun.

Rain chances, as shown below, start to ramp up Thursday evening and will stay with us off-and-on into Saturday afternoon.

Temperatures will warm a bit on Thursday and will stay mild through the weekend, as shown below, before starting to cool on Monday as a system passes by to the south.

It appears, as we look at the extended outlooks below, that we may see a cooler pattern change as we move into January. It also appears we may see more snow chances after the 4th.
