DMPS launches free WiFi on all its school buses

DES MOINES, Iowa — The largest school district in the state is now providing free WiFi service for students on all of its school buses.

The “DMPS On The Go” initiative was first announced in August of 2024 as a way to allow productive use of students’ time while traveling to and from school or during travel for out-of-town events.

“Closing the digital divide is essential for our students to thrive academically and personally. ‘DMPS On The Go’ is another step in ensuring every student has the tools and resources they need, no matter where they are,” said Dr. Ian Roberts, Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools.

Ninety percent of the project’s cost is funded through a partnership with the Federal Communications Commission.

“Each day, thousands of students rely on our buses to get to and from school and activities. ‘DMPS On The Go’ ensures that this travel time can also be learning time, adding real value to their educational journey,” said Samantha Sonnichsen, DMPS Director of Transportation.
