Overnight storms leave damage across central Iowa and more are on the way

DES MOINES, Iowa – Overnight storms brought damaging winds and flooding to parts of central Iowa and more are expected to cause flooding concerns heading into the weekend.

A round of thunderstorms arrived late in the evening, causing tree damage in Greenfield, Guthrie Center, and Melo among other locations. As they arrived in the metro, more damage was reported along with power outages. At one point overnight, around 30,000 people were without power in the Des Moines metro area.

The storms caused high wind gusts, including a 74mph wind report at the Des Moines airport. Other locations in and around the metro reported winds near 70mph.

These storms also brought heavy rain. Des Moines recorded the highest total at 1.77″. Several other locations saw totals near if not over an inch. Here’s a list of more rain totals from 6PM Thursday to 6AM Friday:

  • Osceola: 0.12″
  • Oskaloosa: 0.06″

More scattered storms are expected through the day today. Redevelopment will happen across the state. Cells that fire up in southeastern Iowa will carry a higher severe weather risk. All modes of severe weather will be possible. By tonight, storms should wrap up, paving the way for a quieter and drier weekend.
