Today in History – July 13: Massive missile sites installed in Nebraska, Iowa

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – During the Cold War, Nebraska and Iowa became home to massive intercontinental ballistic missile sites.

The “Atlas D” would have been able to travel more than 6,000 miles, if needed.

The three missile sites were built in near Arlington and Mead, Neb.; and in Missouri Valley, Iowa. The complex was finished in July 1960 and deactivated in October 1964.

Unfortunately, protecting the nation came with an environmental price; contamination is still a problem at the Missouri Valley site today. The last public meeting update from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers happened in May.
