Iowa DOT seeks public input on future of state’s rail system

AMES, Iowa (KCAU) — The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking public comments on a draft plan for the future of the state’s rail system.

The DOT is in the process of updating the State Rail Plan. Part of the update process includes a public comment period, which opened on July 14 and will close after August 28.

The plan looks at things like the maintenance of rail system infrastructure and the potential of adding new rail lines, from the perspectives of both freight and passenger transportation. It also covers which aspects of these plans are the responsibility of private rail companies, and which fall under the purview of Amtrak. In addition, it provides a general overview of the state’s existing and historical rail network, including lines that have been removed from use over the years.
