Record Rain Amounts Closes Road and Trails In Des Moines

(Des Moines, IA ) — There was a series of overnight storms, flash flooding, and tornado warnings this weekend in Des Moines and Ames. A tornado was confirmed near Ames. Police reported cars up to their bumpers in flash flood water in Des Moines.

A record amount of daily rainfall was recorded in Des Moines on Sunday. The National Weather Service reports 2.77 inches of rain fell during the day and about half of that amount came during the storms that rolled through the metro last night. It shatters the record of 2.41 inches set back in 1907.
