Des Moines man sentenced to nearly 20 years for conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, carrying a firearm

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man was sentenced to more than 18 years in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime, according to the United States Attorney’s Office Southern District of Iowa.

Law enforcement approached Sean Michael O’Boyle in his car on Sept. 30, 2024, according to public court documents and evidence presented at his sentencing. O’Boyle reportedly attempted to drive away, hitting a police vehicle and tree before exiting the car and fleeing on foot. He then threw a stolen, loaded firearm into a yard during the foot pursuit.

Upon searching O’Boyle’s car, police found 315 grams of fentanyl, which is considered a distribution quantity. Just two milligrams of fentanyl can be a potentially deadly dose, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration…
