Black Hawk Bridge demolition over Mississippi River coming sooner than later

The Black Hawk Bridge between Iowa and Wisconsin will be torn down sooner than expected as a replacement bridge is underway for 2027.

The Iowa Department on Transportation wanted to demolish the old Lansing Bridge, a 1,702-foot, cantilever bridge connecting Lansing, Iowa with western Wisconsin, by the time its replacement will be complete in two years. However, the department will close and demolish the bridge in fall 2025 to make way for its replacement less than 100 feet away on the Mississippi River.

Known as the Black Hawk Bridge, the Lansing Bridge was completed in 1931 and connects Iowa Highway 9 and Wisconsin Highway 82 over the Mississippi River. The only other connections between Wisconsin and other states across the river are in La Crosse and Prairie du Chien, which are roughly 60 miles apart…
