Des Moines-based executive director works to bring news to visually impaired Iowans

If you have ever heard Maryfrances Evans’ voice on Iowa Radio Reading Information Service, it is safe to assume something went wrong off-air.

Since 2010, Evans has served as the nonprofit’s executive director and handles the daily work including meeting with IRIS’ board, fundraising, keeping the livestream running and paying the bills. A part-time employee coordinates the volunteers needed to read the news each day.

Overall, she considers herself a “behind the scenes” person…
