N’West Iowa gets hit with derecho, heavy rainfall

REGIONAL—N’West Iowa is expected to be cleaning up for weeks after a derecho tore through the area Monday evening and then heavy rains followed the next night.

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, SD, confirmed Monday night’s storm was a derecho, which made its way across the state, and added an EF1 tornado with wind speeds up to 110 mph touched down about one mile east of Alvord at about 9:30 the same evening.

On Tuesday morning, Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation that included O’Brien, Osceola and Sioux counties. A day later, Lyon County was part of a disaster proclamation made by the governor…
