DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines city leaders are giving a second approval to a proposal that raises a fee imposed on gas and electric bills by 2.5%, to help fund its public bus system.
Monday saw the second approval of the proposed increase, which means the Des Moines City Council still needs to pass it one more time. Some say it’s necessary to keep DART moving, while others argue it’s a tax on people who don’t even ride the bus.
“The people who say that probably shop at stores where some portion of the workforce get to work using DART,” Des Moines resident Jon Neiderbach said. “I mean, everything is so interrelated in our society. It’s really hard to try and isolate what you benefit from and what you don’t.”…
