Thunderstorms cause some Iowa State Fair events to be canceled, suspended

DES MOINES, Iowa — On the first day of the Iowa State Fair, thunderstorms dropping heavy rain caused some issues as they moved through the Des Moines metro Thursday morning.

The heavy rain and lightning in the area forced fair officials to cancel some events and suspend others:

  • (8.7.2025 10:57 a.m.) All outdoor activities that had been previously suspended due to lightning are back on.
  • (8.7.2025 10:05 a.m.) ATTENTION: Due to wet conditions, all overflow camping areas are closed. No new campers will be accepted until the areas can be evaluated.
  • (8.7.2025 9:40 a.m.) ATTENTION: The Twins, Triplets and More Contest has been canceled.
  • (8.7.2025 8:45 a.m.) ATTENTION: Due to weather conditions, we’re sad to announce the Antique Tractor Pulls in Elwell Family Park have been canceled.

You can keep track of all the weather-related changes on the fair’s website here…
