As the nation drinks less, Iowa’s past rates stand out

The percentage of U.S. adults drinking alcohol has dropped to a new low as health officials keep an eye on Iowa’s historically high consumption.

Why it matters: While the new data don’t break down consumption by state, past Iowa-specific studies have shown the Hawkeye State has some of the highest binge and heavy drinking rates in the nation, which contributes to cancer risks.

By the numbers: Over half (54%) of U.S. adults this year reported having alcoholic beverages on occasion, according to Gallup data released last week
