DES MOINES, Iowa — Monday marked 131 years since Labor Day officially became a federal holiday, by way of an 1894 Grover Cleveland presidential proclamation. It was first recognized as a holiday by the state of Oregon in 1887.
All these years later, labor activists still take the day to remember those who played a key role in American workers’ achievements. That includes those who work under union contracts.
