Johnston schools dispense love of reading with new vending machines

JOHNSTON, Iowa — The Johnston Community School District recently installed vending machines, but they’re not your average snack dispensers.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, all five Johnston elementary schools will have a new book vending machine in their school library. Instead of dispensing soda or snacks, it will offer a book to each student as a birthday reward. Similar to a normal vending machine, students can insert a special coin and select a book of their choice that they get to keep.

“It was a donation by a foundation that a family in town has, and they wanted to provide books for students so that they would be excited about reading, which goes along with our goals,” said Erin Faas, teacher librarian at Lawson Elementary. “And so each elementary got one this year, and the students are very excited.”…
